Revamped @mentions Interface

BuddyPress Mentions
It’s the most excited feature in the BuddyPress 2.1. With this version, you just need to type a @ when leaving a status update or comment, and the suggestions panel will open with suggested name, similar to Twitter and Facebook.

Continuous Improvement

New Profile Field Type: URL

If you also love to customize profiles in your BuddyPress powered social network with xProfile fields, then there’s a good news because now BuddyPress allows you to add URL field type to profiles. This new field automatically create a link to entered address.

Awesome Translations

Thanks to all the hard-working translation volunteers, BuddyPress now supports high-quality translations that are automatically fetched by WordPress.

Performance Improvements

Just like every update, this update comes with further optimizations to increase BuddyPress’ performance.

What’s For Developers?

There is something for everyone in this release of BuddyPress. If you’re a plugin or theme developer, then you should no following:

  • BuddyPress’ toolbar, BuddyBar, which they started to deprecate in version 1.7, is dead now. So don’t use it for new sites.
  • This release comes with the new bp_core_get_suggestions API which powers the new @mentions interface.
  • Extra CSS classes have been added to Profile Field visibility field elements for better customization.
  • A new group_activity sort order parameter now allows you to query for recent active members in Groups.
  • And a lot more!!

You can get BuddyPress 2.1 from the plugin repository, or right from your WordPress Dashboard. You can also check Boone’s announcement post at this link. It’s the best BuddyPress release, yet!
